International Women's Day Reading: Strong Voices Unite
My work at Show of Force , a film production company with a focus on social issues, exposed me to atrocities affecting women worldwide and the organizations working to provide relief. Having just completed a Masters in fiction at Columbia University, I had the opportunity to become familiar with some of the most talented, influential female writers of our generation.
It only seemed natural to combine these experiences under the umbrella of an International Women’s Day Reading in which powerful voices can share their writings and thoughts about issues facing women and other disenfranchised minorities. Each year, fellow MFA alum, Rachel Schwerin and I, organize and host the reading, which takes place during or around United Nations sponsored International Women’s Month.
The event includes a featured “women’s” charity, which receives a donation from the admission earnings and an opportunity to showcase their work. Charities have included SHOFCO, Room to Read and Racket.
